Kumram Bheem-Asifabad:  Instead of waiting for funds from the government to take developmental activities and to meet expenses, some remote villages of Kumram Bheem Asifabad district are literally converting waste into wealth by making profits by adopting efficient waste management practices and are able to achieve financial empowerment.

The villages are segregating dry waste as part of the novel initiative Palle Pragati programme implemented by the government and Swachch Bharat Abhiyan. For example, the remote Mandaguda village of Tiryani mandal alone earned Rs 5,224 by selling plastic, damaged glass and empty beer bottles. Similarly, Dhaboli village in Jainoor mandal recorded Rs 13,015 by vending dry waste including iron scrap, empty beer bottles and plastic.

Kerameri mandal centre, Chintakarra of Sirpur (T), Kharji village in Dahegaon mandal, Pothepalli and Munjampalli villages in Bejjur mandal and Bejjur mandal centre, Ada in Asifabad mandal had income somewhere between Rs 1,000 and Rs 2,000 through disposing of the dry waste. Many other villages are making sustained efforts to join the suit by drawing inspiration from these habitations.

In the meantime, many villages of the district are earning money by producing vermi-compost fertilizer, branded as ‘Panta Siri’, with the help of wet waste generated in the rural civic bodies. For instance, 20 Gram Panchayats in Koutala mandal registered an income of Rs 15,200 by vending vermicompost fertilizer during a weekly bazaar in the mandal headquarters on Monday.

Kerameri mandal centre, Ambatta village in Bejjur mandal, Jhari village in Kerameri mandal registered revenue of Rs 3,000 by way of similar source recently. These villages are using Vermi-compost fertilizer for growing plants of Palle Prakriti Vanam. These inspiring Gram Panchayats are setting an example to other habitations and are winning plaudits from the authorities concerned.

In-charge District Panchayat Officer A Ravi Krishna said that some villages were converting waste into wealth by selling dry and vermi-compost fertilizer. The income helps them in paying various expenditures and repayment of loans. For instance, the village Gram Panchayats can easily repay loans availed for buying tractors and trolleys under the Palle Pragathi scheme, he opined.

He stated that the villages were given targets of producing 50 kilograms of vermi-compost fertilizer and 50 kgs of dry waste each per month. He added that the Gram Panchayats have manufactured 21,965 kgs of dry waste so far.
