Hyderabad: Green India Challenge (GIC) aims to plant one crore saplings in Assam by 2030. Forestman of India and Padmasri awardee Jadhav Payeng participated in the tree plantation programme organised by the Green India Challenge in Tamalpur in Assam. Local MLA Jolen Daimary along with hundreds of citizens also planted the saplings.

Speaking on the occasion, Jadhav Payeng said that protection of nature and environmental education should be taught as a mandatory subject in the school curriculum. Majority of people were not aware of the dangerous consequences of nature’s destruction. They were not aware how environment conditions in the world were rapidly changing for the worst and how they were threatening the existence of humanity, he said.

Jadhav Payeng complimented former MP J Santosh Kumar for taking up Green India Challenge programme through which awareness all over the country was generated on protection of environment and to plant trees.

Santosh Kumar said taking inspiration from Forestman of India Jadhav, Green India Challenge would be expanded to the length and breadth of the country and by 2030, one crore saplings would be planted in Assam.

Like Jadhav Payeng, who planted and developed Maloi forest using Miyawaki method, Green India Challenge will develop thick forests using the same technique and method.

Jadhav Payeng said that Assam, which was once, was known for its dense forest cover, has been losing the green cover for the past several decades, due to deforestation and, cutting of the trees. Besides stopping forest cutting, there was a need to plant more tress to restore the lost forest cover. He wanted Green India Challenge’s support in this regard.

Local MLA Jolen Daimary said that the Assam government was taking all the measures to protect the forests. Women groups were given Rs 10,000 each to plant saplings and protect trees and they were given the responsibility to take care of these plants, he said.
