Hyderabad: Greyhounds edged Mamata Medical College 74-69 in a thrilling, decisive league match to book the final knockout berth for promotion to Level-II in the GM Sampath Kumar Annual League Basketball Championship at YMCA, Secunderabad, on Tuesday.

Greyhounds made a strong start, with the tall and lanky Tribhuvan finding the basket regularly, while Sai Reddy chipped in with two three-pointers. Greyhounds took the first quarter 18-10, with Srikanth scoring eight of Mamata Medical College’s 10 points.

Mamata fought back in the second quarter, with Aakash and Bablu joining Srikanth in the scoring spree. The trio contributed 22 points, while Mamata’s tight defence restricted Greyhounds to 17 points. Greyhounds led 35-32 at half-time.

After the change of ends, both teams matched each other basket for basket. Kundan played brilliantly for Greyhounds, but Dheeraj of Mamata Medical College sank three three-pointers to level the scores at 50-50 at the end of the third quarter.

The final quarter was a close contest, with the lead changing hands frequently. With just two minutes left, the scores were tied at 66-66. Greyhounds tightened their defence, while Kundan scored two consecutive baskets to give his team a decisive four-point lead. Greyhounds held on to win 74-69.

In another match, Titans ‘B’ beat All Star KVBR 34-30 after trailing 13-14 at half-time, signing off with a win. Both teams were already out of contention for a knockout berth and promotion to Level-II.
