Gorakhpur: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday hailed the implementation of next-generation Goods and Services Tax (GST) reforms, saying the move would boost investor confidence and allow citizens to celebrate the festive season with greater enthusiasm.
The Chief Minister, who was in Gorakhpur, met local traders to mark the rollout of the reforms. Earlier in the day, he also held a Janata Darbar to hear public grievances.
“Today is the first day of Shardiya Navratri. The first form of Goddess Durga, Shailputri, is associated with rituals across the country. On this occasion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given a Diwali gift to the entire nation,” Yogi said.
Highlighting the reforms, he noted: “By implementing the biggest GST reform so far, the rate on general consumer goods has been reduced from 18 per cent and 12 per cent to 5 per cent or 0 per cent.”
He added that farmers and students would also benefit, with GST on farm essentials brought down to 5 per cent or nil, and GST on student teaching materials reduced from 12 per cent to zero. He further pointed out that “significant relief” had also been extended on medicines.
Calling the reform a catalyst for growth, the Chief Minister said it would give new impetus to the Indian economy by boosting purchasing power, strengthening markets, raising consumption, and generating new jobs.
Yogi also said the state government had launched a public outreach campaign to raise awareness about the changes. “Today, for this GST reform, we engaged with merchants, customers, and ordinary consumers. The same slogan is echoing everywhere: ‘Ghati GST, mila uphaar, dhanyawad Modi Sarkar!’”
Expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Modi and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, he concluded: “Every merchant, every consumer, and every citizen is enthusiastically celebrating. It is my good fortune to participate in this program. I extend my best wishes for Shardiya Navratri to all citizens.”
