Sangareddy: A cryptic social media post by TPCC Working President T. Jagga Reddy has triggered intense political speculation within the Congress in Telangana, with leaders debating whether it signals an ultimatum to Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy.
Jagga Reddy recently posted messages in Telugu, English and Hindi on Facebook, hinting at a major announcement. In Telugu, he said he would reveal what is in his heart and would wait until July 30. In English, he wrote that “something big is coming” from “mass leader Jagganna”, while in Hindi he posted “abhi picture baaki hai”.
Political observers believe the posts may be linked to efforts to secure a second term for his wife, Nirmala, whose tenure as chairperson of Telangana Industrial and Infrastructure Corporation Limited (TGIIC) is set to end on July 11.
According to Congress sources, Jagga Reddy had recently visited New Delhi, ostenibly to recommend the names of V. Hanumantha Rao and Kusuma Kumar for Rajya Sabha nominations. However, party insiders say that his primary objective was to seek approval from Rahul Gandhi for extending his wife’s tenure. He reportedly could not secure an appointment during the visit.
The social media posts followed this development, further fuelling speculation.
In a parallel development, Jagga Reddy invited Ministers N. Uttam Kumar Reddy, Komatireddy Venkat Reddy and Damodara Rajanarasimha to an iftar gathering in Sangareddy, where Komatireddy publicly backed him for the TPCC president post.
Political analysts note that such statements could be part of a broader strategy to exert pressure on the party leadership to extend Nirmala’s tenure, despite the apparent improbability of both the Chief Minister and TPCC chief being from the same community.
Jagga Reddy lost the Sangareddy Assembly election in 2023 to BRS candidate Chinta Prabhakar, even as the Congress came to power in the State. Although the party leadership had indicated that defeated candidates or their family members would not be considered for nominated posts, exceptions were made in select cases, including for Jagga Reddy and Bhadrachalam leader Podem Veeraiah.
Nirmala assumed charge as TGIIC chairperson on July 11, 2024, with the tenure set to conclude after two years.
Whether the Congress leadership will yield to the perceived pressure or maintain its stance remains uncertain. Political circles are now keenly watching developments leading up to July 30, the date referenced in Jagga Reddy’s posts.
