Warangal: The district administration is taking steps to conduct awareness programmes to check the ganja and other narcotic drugs menace in the villages and protect the youth from becoming addicts, said Hanamkonda District Collector Rajiv Gandhi Hanumanthu. He also added that they would register cases against those who cultivate ganja (cannabis) under the PD Act.
As a part of the State government’s all out efforts to check or eradicate the drug menace following the directions of Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao, a meeting on the steps to be taken to curb the menace has been conducted at the Hanamkonda district collectorate complex here on Saturday.
Addressing the meeting, Warangal police commissioner Dr Tarun Joshi stressed the need for cooperation from the educational institutions and people’s representatives to check the menace. “We need to keep a tight vigil on the illegal supply of the ganja from other States. We have to take all measures to ensure that the drugs/cannabis would not come to our place/State,” he said and added that there is a need to educate the youth about the ill-effects of the drug consumption through the print, electronic and social media platforms. “We should send a message that no one involved in the supply/consumption is spared,” the CP added.
Warangal District Collector Dr B Gopi, who attended the meeting, said that they had already kept special vigil on the ganja/drug smuggling and booked two cases against the peddlers recently. “We need the complete cooperation of the all stakeholders of the society to put an end to this menace which is ruining the lives of the innocent youths,” he added.
Later, a wall poster on ill-effects of the ganja / drugs consumption and other issues related to ganja has been unveiled at the meeting. DCP Venkatalakshmi, Additional Collectors Sandhyarani, Srivastava, RDOs, DPOs of both the districts and excise staff attended the meeting.
