Hardik Pandya trade uncertainty puts MI captaincy plans under focus

Mumbai Indians face a key captaincy decision ahead of IPL 2027, with Rohit Sharma and Tilak Varma emerging as possible options. Hardik Pandya’s future remains uncertain amid trade speculation, while a mega-auction after the season could shape the franchise’s long-term plans

New Delhi: Having overhauled their coaching staff, the Mumbai Indians’ decision-makers face a bigger and trickier call: whether to appoint the tried-and-tested Rohit Sharma or the relatively inexperienced Tilak Varma as captain.

There are two other senior players in the mix: T20 World Cup-winning skipper Suryakumar Yadav, who is also in the latter stages of his career, and Jasprit Bumrah, who many believe should not be burdened with captaincy.

While Mumbai Indians are yet to confirm any trade offers for Hardik Pandya, their captain for the last three seasons, it appears unlikely that the flamboyant Baroda all-rounder will lead one of the IPL’s most popular franchises in the upcoming season, even if he stays.

A mega-auction will follow the 2027 IPL season, with most teams expected to rebuild their squads from scratch with an eye on the next five to seven years.

But the 2027 edition is one tournament in which MI owner Akash Ambani, top official Rahul Sanghvi and head coach Kieron Pollard — the three key decision-makers — will have to decide whether to turn to their five-time IPL-winning captain one last time or make a fresh start with India’s T20 vice-captain Tilak.

Rohit for one season could be the safest choice

Rohit will turn 40 in the middle of next year’s IPL. Logically, the 2027 season could be his last as an MI player before he retires after the 2027 ODI World Cup, for which he is preparing intensively.

When it comes to tactical acumen and on-field leadership, Rohit still has few equals. However, there has been a significant shift in how franchise think-tanks operate, with greater reliance on analytics and long-term planning.

For MI, who are going through a transition, there may be no one better placed to guide the team for a year before the mega-auction.

Rohit has mostly been used as an ‘Impact Player’ over the last couple of seasons. However, if he becomes captain, MI would have the flexibility to use another player as a substitute, depending on the match situation.

Tilak, who is being viewed as a future leader and is a home-grown MI player, could serve as Rohit’s understudy before taking over as the long-term option for at least the next five years.

Relationship with new head coach Kieron Pollard

Of the five titles Rohit won as captain of Mumbai Indians, Pollard was an integral part of every campaign. He is among the few cricketers who have seen Rohit through every phase of his captaincy: its beginnings, peak years and later stages.

Few understand ‘Captain Sharma’ better than ‘Polly Kaka’, as Pollard is affectionately known in MI circles. The duo produced several memorable comebacks during their title-winning campaigns.

In IPL 2027, MI are unlikely to change their team composition significantly. Rohit could therefore remain the best leader for the squad available to the franchise.

Tilak, on the other hand, would likely prefer to begin his leadership journey, if appointed, with a clean slate and have a say in player recruitment at the mega-auction.

Where does this leave Hardik Pandya?

According to people who closely track Hardik Pandya’s movements, there is a strong possibility that a trade will happen sooner or later.

“Hardik isn’t a confrontational person. In case MI doesn’t get a suitable trade for him, he will certainly stay back for a year and give his 110-120 per cent. It won’t matter if he is the captain or not; there will be no lack of commitment.

“But a trade isn’t something that is in his hands. It is up to MI ownership to weigh the pros and cons of any trade offer that comes along,” an IPL source told PTI.
