Hyderabad: Telangana Ku Haritha Haram, the country’s biggest plantation drive, was just a beginning. The State has not stopped there, with Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao’s recent announcement of the Haritha Nidhi initiative also bringing in appreciation from all quarters. While the Haritha Haram is already helping increase the green cover in the State, people are happy that the Haritha Nidhi will support the activities promoting ecology and greenery in the State.

Rajeev Khandelwal, a member of Hyderabad Birding Pals and prominent photographer from the city, says that the increase in lung spaces around the city has contributed to the number of birds in the area.“I regularly visit nearby places like Ameenpur Lake, where we can sight birds. Thanks to Haritha Haram, I can definitely say that due to the increased greenery, the number of birds has also gone up. In fact, population of several animals has increased across the State in proportion with the greenery going up,” he said.

“Having said that, I feel that now the government needs to look into sustaining the area and keep adding more trees to it. Taking up the responsibility to nurture the sapling is as important as sowing them. I think Haritha Nidhi will help the government to do that,” he added.

Speaking of ecological development, Vivek Singh, a working professional from the city and an animal lover, shares that greenery is helpful to all kinds of animals.

“For the last three to four years, there is an increase in the number of birds and even butterflies in the city. And like earlier, they aren’t just limited to a park. The green funds will ensure that these green areas within the city are nicely maintained and do not get neglected,” he said. With the Haritha Nidhi now to propel the Haritha Haram campaign forward, green lovers also feel Telangana is all set to become the greenest State in the country.
