Hyderabad: Heavy rainfall accompanied with strong winds and thunder lashed almost all areas under Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), Medchal-Malkajgiri and Rangareddy districts on Friday evening.

The severe downpour was sudden and very heavy across major parts of the city, disrupting the traffic across all the major thoroughfares. The sudden downpour triggered heavy inundation, as several low-lying regions across the city came under sheets of rainwater. The intensity of the short spell of rainfall was such that at some places visibility dropped to a few meters, forcing motorists to take shelter and wait for the pounding rain to end.

The Enforcement, Vigilance and Disaster (EVDM) wing of GHMC issued an alert on social media platform Twitter, urging people to take precautions during their commute. “Cloud systems formed in and around the city leading to heavy sporadic rainfall. Sudden showers expected to continue for the next one hour,” EVDM officials tweeted.

Almost all the areas under GHMC, Rangareddy and Medchal-Malkajgiri districts including Begumpet, Ameerpet, Somajiguda, Banjara Hill and Jubilee Hills, Rajendarnagar, Shamshabad, Tolichowki, Saroornagar, Kothapet, Meerpet, Peddamberpet, Balapur, Moghalpura, old Malakpet, Saidabad, Dilsukhnagar, LB Nagar, Mallapur, Nacharam, Habsiguda, Tarnaka, Sainikpuri, A S Rao Nagar, ECIL, Kushaiguda, Charminar, Chaderghat, Amberpet, Nampally, Yakutpura, LB Nagar, and Vanasthalipuram received heavy downpour.

  2. Saidabad 100 mm (10cm)
  3. Hayathnagar 88.3 mm (8.83 cm)
  4. Asmangadh 87.5 mm (8.75 cm)
  5. Charminar 86.8 mm (8.68 cm)
