Hyderabad: Tension continued to simmer at Begum Bazaar for the second consecutive day on Thursday over the construction of a public toilet near a graveyard and mosque at Feelkhana.

The traders along with the local Bharatiya Janata Party functionaries gave a bandh call on Thursday in the Begum Bazaar and surrounding markets.

Shops were closed down and several traders along with local BJP leaders attempted to take out a rally in the market but the police stopped them saying it was a violation of the Covid-19 guidelines in force and no permission was sought for it.

The works were stopped on Wednesday following a protest by AIMIM party workers and local people.

Heavy police deployment is made in the Begum Bazaar, Feelkhana and surrounding areas to prevent any untoward incident. Teams from the Commissioner’s Task Force and City Rapid Action Force are deployed in the area to assist the local police.

On Wednesday AIMIM party workers staged a protest demonstration demanding stopping the works of the public toilet as it is adjacent to the graveyard. On Tuesday a gate was also erected right behind the place where the public toilet is coming up.

The GHMC officials maintained that the construction is being done on orders of the High Court.
