Heavy rain, gusty winds disrupt traffic across Hyderabad

Moderate rain accompanied by strong winds, lightning and thunder disrupted normal life in Hyderabad on Tuesday. Traffic jams were reported across several areas, while fallen tree branches affected movement. Traffic police advised commuters to avoid some key stretches

Hyderabad: A spell of moderate rain accompanied by strong winds, lightning and thunder in several parts of Hyderabad on Tuesday triggered disruptions, throwing normal life out of gear.

With Tuesday being a working day, the rain caused heavy traffic jams at several locations across core Hyderabad, Secunderabad and the Hitec City-Gachibowli areas. Gusty winds broke tree branches at a few locations, affecting the smooth flow of traffic.

According to rainfall data from the Telangana State Development Planning Society (TSDPS), the highest rainfall recorded by 7 pm on Tuesday was 32.8 mm in Vittalvadi area of Himayathnagar, followed by 28.5 mm at Hydernagar in Kukatpally, 25.3 mm at the PHC Centre in Balajinagar, Kukatpally, 25 mm at Bansilalpet under Musheerabad and 23.5 mm at Turkayamjal under Abdullapurmet mandal in Rangareddy district.

Overall, Tuesday’s rainfall ranged from light to moderate (2.5 mm to below 40 mm) in various parts of Hyderabad.

Despite the moderate showers, the Hyderabad Traffic Police reported incidents of broken tree branches on the main road near SBI, Bank Street, Koti, leading to traffic jams in the area. Traffic personnel were involved in clearing the fallen branches and regulating traffic at Koti.

The traffic authorities also issued an advisory to commuters to avoid the Shaikpet flyover, the Tolichowki flyover towards Nanalnagar and Rethibowli due to slow vehicular movement caused by the rain.

Traffic was also crawling in several core areas and neighbourhoods, including Paradise, Begumpet, Ameerpet, RP Road, Marredpally, Trimulgherry, Picket, AOC, Safilguda, Old Bowenpally, Kompally, ECIL, Malkajgiri, Tarnaka, Mettuguda, Sangeet Cross Roads and nearby areas.
