Hyderabad: Conmen duped a woman, a herbal medicine practitioner from Mehdipatnam of Rs.41 lakh on the pretext of buying a medicine formula.
According to the police, one person contacted the woman through WhatsApp two years ago, saying he was James Mario from the United States. After chatting with her on herbal medicine and treatments, he said a US company was willing to buy a medicinal formula for Rs.5 crore from her. A few days ago, he told her he was sending the money. The next day, an unknown person called her over phone and said Rs.5 crore had come to the Reserve Bank of India and that she should pay Rs. 26 lakh towards exchange fee.
“Believing the caller, she transferred the sum to a bank account. Later another person called her saying Mario would have to sign some documents or else she would have to pay Rs.15 lakh, which she paid,” said KVM Prasad, ACP (Cybercrime) Hyderabad.
The victim realised the fraud only when she did not receive the Rs.5 crore. A case has been registered and investigation is on.
