While it probably takes many years for us to walk among robots on the street, millions of people around the world are taking to social media platforms like Instagram to follow and engage with a new wave of online personalities — Virtual influencers.
A virtual influencer is a digital character created using computer graphics software. Behind each of them are clever creators – brands and individuals with a keen eye for technology —who remain faceless. They can be photographed in any manner, at any time and place and also, their personas can be tailored to match the creator’s and target audience’s preferences.
The creators have complete control over how they seem, dress, and act. They also get to choose who the influencers hang out with, date, fall out, and collaborate with, on Instagram. Best of all, they get to keep the money these influencers make from their brand deals.
These creators then edit their influencers onto whatever backdrops they want. Many global brands are embracing the virtual world as part of their digital marketing strategies. The added advantages that virtual influencers bring on to the table are huge.
According to Virtual Humans, a website tracking virtual influencers across platforms, there are more than 150 virtual influencers on social media. In India, the first time a Virtual Influencer was launched was in August, 2020.
