Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA), which played a key role in the city’s massive transformation, will observe its formation day on Wednesday.
Formed on August 25, 2008, the HMDA’s jurisdiction is spread over 7,257 sq km and is vested with the responsibility of promoting and securing a planned development of the Hyderabad Metropolitan Region. Presently, Municipal Administration Urban Development (MAUD) principal secretary Arvind Kumar is holding the position of Metropolitan Commissioner.
Apart from building a series of flyovers, the Authority had a key role in the development of an IT & ITeS SEZ at Kokapet, in an area of about 119 acres, by providing infrastructure facilities, and has more townships on cards. Building major townships at Miyapur, Vanastalipuram, Shamshabad and Ramachandrapuram has also led to the city’s urban growth.
Meanwhile, building regulations and layout regulations and their enforcement and the development of Outer Ring Road played a major role in attracting investors. Over the years, the planned growth of the city has resulted in scores of residential and commercial projects mushrooming in the HMDA limits.
Apart from being a contributor in the city’s metamorphosis by developing townships, the HMDA has ensured equal priority to projects in safeguarding the citizens. It has come up with trauma care centres at 10 interchanges of the Outer Ring Road (ORR) which turned out to be a game changer in saving scores of lives during accidents. Recently, the HMDA set a record by generating Rs. 2,000.37 crore by auctioning eight plots covering 49.92 acres in Kokapet on behalf of the State government.
In another recent achievement, which had the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) declaring Hyderabad as a ‘Water Plus’ city, the three sewage treatment plants (STPs) set up by HMDA also contributed. The metropolitan authority has also intensified its efforts to conserve the city’s heritage and apart from water bodies has been working on stepwells.
