HMWSSB intensifies inspections, imposes heavy penalties for water wastage

HMWSSB has intensified surprise inspections across Hyderabad and warned of disconnection of water connections for repeat offenders. Officials fined consumers for wasting drinking water and illegal motor use, while the board urged residents to conserve water amid deficient rainfall and rising demand.

Hyderabad: Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has decided to intensify surprise inspections and disconnect water connections of repeat offenders amid incidents of water wastage across Hyderabad.

First-time offenders will be fined Rs 1,000, with penalties rising to Rs 5,000, Rs 10,000 and up to Rs 20,000 for repeated violations. Repeat offenders also face disconnection of their water supply.

During water-supply hours on Monday morning, officials conducted surprise inspections in Jubilee Hills and identified five consumers unnecessarily wasting drinking water. Fines were imposed under the regulations.

At Saroornagar Circle, officials imposed a Rs 5,000 penalty in SK Nagar, Dilsukhnagar, after finding that a motor was being used illegally. In Alkapuri Yadavnagar, a consumer was fined Rs 1,000 for wasting drinking water while cleaning the floor.

HMWSSB urged consumers to use water judiciously and not waste a single drop, saying El Niño and deficient rainfall had left the Manjira and Singur reservoirs running dry amid continuously rising demand.

HMWSSB management also warned that negligent officials would face action and be held responsible for water wastage.
