Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has directed owners of private sewage treatment plants (STPs) within its jurisdiction to register by October 25.
In an official statement on Sunday, HMWSSB Managing Director K Ashok Reddy said registration was mandatory for STPs at apartments, gated communities, commercial complexes, hotels, hospitals, educational institutions, industries and other private establishments.
Only 61 of an estimated 600 private STPs have registered so far. Reddy urged the remaining owners to register immediately rather than wait until the deadline.
Owners must provide the establishment’s name, address and contact details, STP capacity, daily sewage treatment volume, use of treated water and availability of surplus treated water. They were advised to verify the information carefully before submitting it.
The initiative aims to ease pressure on drinking water sources during the coming summer by encouraging the use of treated water for non-potable purposes, including construction, industrial operations and garden maintenance. Priority will be given to the productive use of surplus treated water from private STPs, Reddy said.
