Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) has taken up a series of measures to increase its revenue and ensure its coffers are not dented. Initiating stringent action on commercial water connection bill defaulters, dial-a-septic tank cleaner service, inspecting meters of water filling stations to ensure they are not tampered were some of the measures taken to augment the revenue.
The department has also pressed into action its vigilance team to crack the whip on illegal supply of free water tankers to commercial establishments and bust illegal water connections. The vigilance officials of water board are frequently inspecting industrial areas in and around Hyderabad where the demand for water tankers among commercial establishments are high.
Recently, the board’s vigilance wing busted a water tanker scam that was reportedly causing a loss of around Rs 50 lakh per month to the department. Criminal cases were also booked on people who were diverting free water tankers to commercial establishment in Katedan Industrial Area.
Following this, the automatic vehicle tracking system fitted to the water tankers is closely being monitored by top officials. “We have been instructed to file criminal cases against people involved in irregularities which include illegal diversion of free water tankers and drawing of water from pipes illegally. Movement of the water tanker is under vigil, they are being tracked by top officials in the board” a HMWS&SB official from vigilance wing, said.
Pertaining to bill defaulters, the water board is developing an exclusive mobile app, water connections will be geo-tagged and reminders will be sent to defaulters over the phone. As part of the exercise, teams will go around localities to inspect the water connections in buildings and identify commercial connections, status of their payments will also be checked simultaneously.
“HMWS&SB Managing Director Dana Kishore has instructed us to stop water supply to the establishments that have bills pending since the time connection was availed,” water board officials said.
Meanwhile, another activity which generates revenue besides conserving the environment, i.e., Dial-a-Septic Tank cleaner service is also being taken-up. As part of the exercise, more than 80 unregulated private desludging operators were empanelled and licensed. Citizens need to call 155313 or 14420 and the vehicle will transport the faecal matter to the faecal Sludge Treatment Plant.
