HMWSSB warns against dumping waste into manholes, says manholes aren’t trashcans

Hyderabad: The HMWSSB cautioned citizens that manholes should not be used as trash bins and urged them to avoid dumping waste into them, saying such practices could lead to blockages and related civic issues.

During the cleaning of choked manholes in Madhapur, Chanda Naik Tanda and surrounding localities over the past three days, HMWSSB officials identified the root cause of the overflowing. “Blankets, bed sheets, clothes, plastic items and other solid waste are being removed from manholes during de-silting work, where sewage overflow has been reported in the Madhapur Circle, Chanda Naik Tanda and surrounding localities for the past two months,” said a press release on Thursday.

HMWSSB used high-pressure jetting machines and telescopic hydraulic grabbers to remove silt from the main sewage pipe and restore sewage flow. During the exercise, blankets, bed sheets, clothes, plastic items and other solid waste were extracted from manholes, an official said.
