Adilabad: The annual festival of colours, Holi, was celebrated with traditional fervour and gaiety across the erstwhile Adilabad district on Friday.
People from all walks of life gathered at junctions in towns and villages to celebrate the festival in Adilabad, Mancherial, Nirmal and Kumram Bheem Asifabad district centres from early morning till afternoon. They sprinkled water mixed with vibrant colours, among other activities. Many bathed in nearby streams and rivers to wash off the colours.
Superintendents of Police Akhil Mahajan, Dr Janaki Sharmila, Nitika Pant and DCP A Bhaskar participated in the celebrations in the district headquarters of the four districts respectively. They danced to drum beats to rouse the spirit of the celebrators. They joined the celebrators by smearing colours on officials, members of TNGOs and press persons in the four districts, setting their designations aside for a while.
Aboriginal tribals shared dried coconuts and natural food items among themselves in tribal habitations as part of the celebrations in Adilabad and Kumram Bheem Asifabad districts. Tribal habitations came alive with dwellers taking part in colourful celebrations.
Meanwhile, members of the Marwari community conducted the ‘Dhundh’ ritual, which is similar to a naming ceremony, in Mancherial town as part of the colourful Holi celebrations. They fed participants and offered cool drinks. They danced to traditional songs. Roads and streets witnessed grand celebrations, while meat and liquor outlets registered brisk sales.
