Mancherial/Kumram Bheem Asifabad: Taking holy dip in rivers on the occasion of Maha Shivaratri festival, turned out to be tragic for two families.

A 43-year-old lorry driver accidentally drowned in Godavari River when he went to take a holy dip at Velala village in Jaipur mandal of Mancherial district on Saturday. The deceased was identified as Sunke Srinivas, a native of Somagudem village in Kaspiet mandl, Jaipur Sub-Inspector K Ramakrishna said. Srinivas got washed away when he was taking a dip in a deepest spot in Godavari River, while his 14 family members were also having a holy bath at a safer place. He ventured into the river as part of celebrations of Maha Shiavaratri festival even though he was not familiar with swimming. His body was traced by expert divers at the same spot of the mishap.

In a seperate incident, a teenager met with a watery grave when he was taking a dip in Penganga River near Thatipelli village in Koutala mandal belonging to Kumram Bheem Asifabad district on Friday. The deceased was identified as Jeeth Roy, a Class VIII student of Ravindranagar in Chintalamanepalli mandal. He was the only son of Parimal and Suneetha. Roy drowned in the river when he went to take holy dip along with his friends. His friends realised that Roy drowned in the river only when they all reached ashore. They alerted parents of the boy who in turn informed the police. Expert divers were pressed for fishing out the body.
