Hyderabad: Three persons including a home guard were arrested by the police for extorting Rs 20,000 from a lorry driver who caused a fatal accident at Ghatkesar early this month.
The three persons are Elijarla Balaraju (35), former home guard, Dima Srinu (36), a businessman and Bandarapu Shiva, home guard working with Ghatkesar police station.
According to the police, a lorry hit a car at NFC Nagar bridge in Ghatkesar police station limits on November 25 resulting in death of one person and injuries to another person.
The home guard Shiva, who was on patrolling duty reached the spot and spoke to the lorry driver. “As no one had witnessed the road accident, he asked the driver to move his lorry from the spot and stand at a distance. Later, the he sent Srinu and Balaraju to the spot and asked them to collect Rs. 20,000 from him. After paying the money, the driver of the lorry left the place,” said the Ghatkesar police.
On information about the accident, the Ghatkesar police had booked a case and started investigation. The police tracked down the lorry and the driver who caused the accident.
“The driver of the lorry told us that he had paid Rs. 20,000 to two persons who allowed him to leave the place. On identifying the two persons with the help of a mobile phone number, we came to know that the amount was collected at the behest of Shiva by Srinu and Balaraju. A case is registered and all the three persons arrested,” the police official said.
