Warangal: In what can be termed as ‘honour killing’, a woman with the help of her mother allegedly killed her daughter for having an ‘affair’ with a man from a lower caste at Parvathagiri village in the district.

While the two tried to project the death as suicide in the early hours of November 20, the police established their role in the murder and arrested them after thorough investigation into the case.

Disclosing the details at a press conference here on Friday, East DCP Venkatalakshmi said Parvathagiri police arrested Ubbani Sammakka (38) and her mother Namu Yakamma (58) on Friday for allegedly killing Ubbani Anjali (17), daughter of Sammakka and Babu, as the deceased was in ‘love’ with one Rayapuram Prashant from the same village.

“As the accused did not like Anjali’s affair with Prashanth, who is from a low caste, they tried to convince her to end the relationship. But when Anjali refused to do so, Sammakka and her mother decided to eliminate her to protect their ‘honour’ in society. The two smothered the young girl with a pillow besides strangulating her. Moreover, they tried to project the murder as suicide,” the DCP said.

A special investigation was carried out by Parvathagiri Inspector Vishweshwar under the supervision of Mamunur ACP A Naresh Kumar, since they suspected Sammakka. The two were arrested after the police team collected evidence. “The accused confessed to the crime before the police,” the DCP added.
