Dubai: Some youngsters from Telangana, who are already working in Gulf countries, are falling prey to digital fraud as they are lured with high-paying job offers and trapped by traffickers in Southeast Asia.
It was a former employee in Dubai, who quit his job and moved to Myanmar and alerted officials back home in Telangana, leading to rescue and repatriation of nearly 540 Indians.
K. Madhukar Reddy of Karimnagar district was working in Dubai where he was lured with an attractive salary, after which he moved to a remote place on the Myanmar–Thailand border where he slowly realised that his new job was to con people online. His alert and appeal to Indian officials prompted local officials to raid scam call centres and rescue and repatriate many Indian youths including a significant number from Telangana with IT skills.
The Indian Embassy in Rangoon on Tuesday said on X that in coordination with Myanmar’s union authorities and local groups, 283 Indian nationals at scam compounds in the Myawaddy area were released and repatriated through Mae Sot in Thailand. These included 17 women as well. A second batch of 257 people was expected to be repatriated on Tuesday, according to reports.
There are a total of 23 people from Telangana in two batches, according to primary information. It’s noteworthy to mention that all those repatriated from Thailand were technically expelled from the country, which can be an obstacle in future for them to apply for visas for other countries.
The Golden Triangle, a region where the borders of Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar intersect, has become a hotspot for organised cybercrime networks. The Telangana Police was the first in the country to act to rescue Indian victims trapped in the Golden Triangle.
