Doxxing typically happens in online spaces such as social media platforms, online forums, or chat rooms. It can be carried out by individuals or groups with various motivations, including revenge, disagreements, or just to cause distress. Victims of doxxing may face severe consequences, ranging from online harassment to real-world threats, stalking, or even violence.

Proactive strategies:

Keep personal details private: Avoid posting sensitive information like your home address, phone number, or full name on public platforms.

Review privacy settings: Ensure your social media profiles are set to private, and regularly check the settings as platforms may update their policies.

Separate online identities: Keep your personal, professional, and social profiles distinct, and consider using different email addresses for each purpose.

Enable two-factor authentication (2FA): Add an extra layer of protection to your online accounts by requiring additional verification steps, such as a code sent to your phone.

Use strong passwords: Make sure your passwords are complex and unique for every account, and avoid reusing them across different platforms.

Monitor activity: Regularly check your accounts for suspicious activity, and report any signs of hacking or unauthorised access.

Remove your data from people search sites: Many websites list personal information; you can often request removal to prevent it from being easily found.

Avoid phishing attempts: Be cautious about unsolicited emails, messages, or websites that try to trick you into revealing personal details.

Don’t click on suspicious links: Always verify the authenticity of emails or messages asking for sensitive information.
