Hyderabad: Two-time World rapid champion GM Koneru Humpy served another reminder, if needed, that she continues to be a force to reckon with by winning the FIDE Pune Grand Prix last week.

“Yes, winning a classical format title after a long gap (2019 was last when she won the Grand Prix title in Russia) and that too at home is something really special,” Humpy informed ‘Telangana Today’.

“Yes, after the pandemic, this is the first major title in the Classical format as it has been a success story more in rapid and blitz formats for me in the recent past,” she said with a smile.

“I think overall it was a very satisfying performance, and I was able to convert even slight advantages in complex situations into winning positions. I believe my calculations have improved vastly compared to the last two or three years,” Humpy said.

“Honestly, I am not playing the sport with any specific aim of winning the World Chess Championship (classical format). I simply enjoy playing the sport,” Humpy said. “If that World championship comes my way, I will definitely try. I am not too stressed about that title,” she added.

“My next major tournament is the Norway Chess from May 26, where the top six players will be in action, and with equal prize money for both men and women,” she said.
“Frankly, there are no big changes in the preparations for the different formats. All boils down to the three-weeks of training before a major event when I focus on the format I am going to play,” Humpy said.

“Honestly, it is more difficult to stay away from my daughter (Ahana, entering third Standard in school) now given the fact that she wants my presence in everything she does,” Humpy said.

“Yes, of course, she does follow my career now more, keeps asking me whether I won a trophy or not, having seen crowds receive me at the airport in the past. Those images were registered in her mind,” said the ONGC Chief Manager (HR).

“It is common for anyone to have ups and downs. At this age (she is 38), we keep thinking of so many things in life. Yes, sometimes, I do feel exhausted after a long tournament or too much practice. It is natural for anyone. But again it is the passion that keeps me going,” said Humpy, who loves to spend time with her family when free.
“I am lucky to have great support from my family, which ensures me to play chess at the highest level,” she signed off.
