Huzurabad: Diwali festival helped increase voting percentage in Huzurabad Assembly constituency by-election on Saturday. People staying in different areas came to their native places to exercise their franchise.
Besides the by-election, Diwali festival scheduled on November 4 drove the people to come to their native places. As a result, the voting percentage in the by-election surged.
It may be recalled here that 86.18 per cent voting was recorded in 2018 general elections in Huzurabad segment. Usually, less percentage of voting is recorded in bypolls. Unlike the routine practice, the highest percentage of polling was recorded in the Huzurabad by-election this time. Since the constituency has train connectivity, people from the segment migrated to Hyderabad, Bengaluru and other districts of the State in search of employment. Moreover, many people from the area working in Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) spread in five districts of the State.
With just three days left for Diwali festival, a majority of migrated people had come to their native places to exercise their votes as well as celebrate the festival. Srikanth, working in a private company in Hyderabad, came to his native Jammikunta town. Speaking to Telangana Today, Srikanth said he had come to Jammikunta to exercise vote as well as celebrate Diwali. His brother Naresh, who stays in Bengaluru, also came home. Over 75 per cent of passengers of Intercity express train, which runs between Secunderabad and Sirpur Kagaznagar, got down in Jammikunta station on Saturday morning, he said.
