Hyderabad: Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister KT Rama Rao on Friday inaugurated a 100 MLD sewage treatment plant (STP) in Fatehnagar.
Speaking on the occasion, the minister said that 1,950 MLD of sewage was generated every day in the city, of which 94 percent went into the River Musi.
“Out of the total waste generated, 772 MLD of waste is being treated through STPs and then discharged into water bodies,” the Minister said, mentioning that Hyderabad was ahead in sewage treatment compared to other cities in the country.
The 17 STPs in the city would treat 60 percent of the sewage. He recalled the incident where nine people died in Bholakpur due to drinking water being mixed with sewage water. He further emphasised on the need to treat sewage water and said that the onus of conserving water bodies also lies with the people.
“During desilting of a nala recently, pillows and mattress were also fished out. People should not dump waste into water bodies,” said the Minister. Labour Minister Ch. Malla Reddy and Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board officials were present.
