Hyderabad: Paediatric surgeons at Care Hospitals have successfully conducted an open-heart surgery on a 16-day-old-infant, brought to the hospital in Hyderabad by parents from a village in Odisha. The parents Thofan Mallik and Priyanka Priyadarshini and the newborn travelled in an ambulance for 30-hours non-stop during the lockdown to reach Hyderabad from Odisha.
The baby was born with a congenital heart condition in which blood with less oxygen coming to the heart was going back to the body due to reversal of heart structure. According to senior cardiologist from the hospital, Dr Prashant Patil, there was also no connection of heart to the whole body.
As a result, the doctors decided to take-up an open-heart surgery. “The surgery was complicated and we not only had to connect the heart to original structures but also the whole body,” said Dr. Tapan K Dash, Clinical Director and Head, Care Children’s Heart Institute, who performed the surgery in four hours.
Despite the surgery being expensive, the hospital doctors managed the expenses and saved the life of the infant, Dr. Rahul Medakkar, Facility Chief Operating Officer, Care Banjara Hills, said.
