Hyderabad: 28 artificial ponds readied for immersion

Hyderabad: For Ganesh idol immersion, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has readied 28 artificial ponds in the city.

Fresh water was released into them and idol immersion has already commenced in most of these water bodies. The ponds located near Durgam Cheruvu, Malkam Cheruvu, Nallagandla Cheruvu popularly known and Pedda Cheruvu, are some places where idols were immersed on Monday.


The GHMC officials said that elaborate arrangements have been made to facilitate immersion.

“We have deployed staffers at all the ponds to help the devotees in immersion of idols,” said Ram Babu, GHMC chief entomologist. Moreover, the personnel deployed by the civic body removed the idols immediately after immersion.

While immersion was underway, sanitation and anti-larval activities apart from fogging was taken up at these ponds. In some water bodies, drones were used to spray larvicides. Most of the artificial ponds are about 43×43 in size and idols of up to 8×10 feet can be immersed in them.

Meanwhile, Ganesh idol immersion started in parts of city with devotees dressed up in traditional best heading towards artificial ponds and lakes to immerse the idols. Dancing to the ‘teenmar’ band and folk songs, they thronged the water bodies and immersed the idols.

Meanwhile, Lions Club of Hyderabad Yuva, Department of Language & Culture, and State Tourism Development Corporation teams are visiting housing societies to award those organising best celebrations.

For the award, a total of 28 housing societies including Golf View Apartment and My Home Vihanga in Financial District, Jain Carlton Creek in Khajaguda and Aparna Cyber Commune in Nallagandla, are in the race.

Bhagwat inspects arrangements

Rachakonda Police Commissioner Mahesh Bhagwat visited Nalla Cheruvu in Uppal and the Kapra Lake and ponds in Rampally and Cherlapally and reviewed the Ganesh idol immersion arrangements on Monday.

The Commissioner asked officers to coordinate with the National Highways authorities and GHMC authorities for road repairs. Hassle-free and incident free Ganesh idol immersion was the aim, he said, also instructing the police, municipal, traffic and revenue authorities for making foolproof arrangements for the immersion.
