Hyderabad: This four-year-old went through more trauma than other children of her age who live on the streets, all to end up a lifeless, unidentified body on the footpath in Hyderabad.

Mehak, originally from Miyapur, had seen her father getting arrested for a crime and taken away to prison, and even before she could process that in her little mind, she saw her mother get close with a stranger, with the two of them taking her away from what she thought was her home, to beg on the streets of Mumbai and Delhi. The little one protested and demanded to see her father.

Her refusal to beg on the streets of Bengaluru, where they reached after begging in Delhi, Mumbai and Jaipur and Manali, angered the new man in her mother’s life, with the two allegedly beating her, landing fist blows on the little one’s abdomen and kicking her too.

The torture, according to the Punjagutta police who cracked the murder case and the arrests exactly in a week after Mehak’s cold body was found on the footpath in Punjagutta, was more than what she could handle, and she passed out.

West Zone Joint Commissioner of Police, AR Srinivas, said Mehak’s mother, Heena Begum, and her recently found live-in partner, Shaik Mohammed Khadar alias Rizwan, then brought the body by bus to Hyderabad, and abandoned the dead child on the footpath leading to the NIMS Hospital.

Unraveling what happened before the body was found by local residents on November 4, police said Heena Begum was married to Mohd Ahmed, with whom she had three children, including Mehak. Ahmed was recently arrested for robbery and was in judicial remand. Heena, meanwhile, met Rizwan at a toddy compound, and they decided to be together. They took Mehak and her seven-year-old brother along and began begging in other cities. However, with Mehak not happy with the presence of Rizwan and insisting to go back to her father, the two got angry and the child was subjected to severe physical torture, leading to her death and finally, being abandoned dead on the street, police said.

The body was initially a mystery, but with autopsy indicating internal injuries, the investigation took a turn and with CCTV footage nailing Heena Begum, the suspects were traced to Rajasthan, from where they were arrested and brought to Hyderabad.
