Hyderabad: A total of 42 individuals who had sustained different kinds of eye related injuries while bursting firecrackers during the Diwali celebrations, received treatment at State-run Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital, Mehdipatnam.

Out of the 42 patients who were brought to the emergency wing of the tertiary eye-care facility between Wednesday and Friday, seven patients were admitted to the hospital.

The ophthalmologists had to conduct emergency eye surgeries on three patients, while the remaining four patients are under observation. Between Thursday and Friday, a total of 27 patients were brought to the hospital with various degree of eye-related injuries sustained while bursting crackers.

“At present seven patients are admitted out of which we have operated on three patients while the remaining four are under observation. They received corneal perforating injuries, which is nothing but corneal tears due to the impact of the fire crackers. The corneas of these patients were repaired and the patients are under observation,” said senior ophthalmologist and Head, Cornea department, S D Eye Hospital, Dr Srinivas Prasad.

The senior eye surgeon said that it would be difficult to predict whether they would be able to recover their eye sight.

“We have to wait and see for the eye to heal after the surgery was conducted. The three patients had suffered injury for only one eye while the second eye among them was normal,” Dr Srinivas pointed out.

Meanwhile, private super-speciality eye care facilities in Hyderabad including LV Prasad Eye Institute, Maxivision and Dr Agarwal’s also received patients with minor eye injuries.
