Hyderabad: Forty-nine foreign nationals have been identified for allegedly overstaying in India or violating immigration regulations during a special joint operation conducted by the Hyderabad City Police and the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO).
The operation, launched on August 31 by the Special Branch’s Foreigners Monitoring Cell in coordination with the FRRO, local Law and Order police and the Hyderabad IT Cell, was aimed at verifying foreign nationals, checking compliance with visa conditions and preventing unlawful activities.
Of the 49 persons identified, 12 have already been deported to their respective countries, while the process of deporting or removing the remaining persons was under way, Hyderabad Police Commissioner V C Sajjanar said.
The highest number of overstayers was identified under the Tolichowki police station limits (30), followed by Langar House (6), Mehdipatnam (6), Rajendranagar (3), Banjara Hills (2) and Gudimalkapur (1).
The verification also uncovered cases involving alleged criminal activities, with police recovering 250 grams of ganja from one foreign national. Three South Sudanese nationals who entered India on student visas and were allegedly overstaying since 2018, 2023 and 2025, respectively, tested positive for cannabis during drug screening in Rajendranagar.
Some foreign nationals were also allegedly involved in counterfeit currency-related fraud and cheating. Others who had entered India on student visas continued working as hospital translators or intermediaries after their visas expired, allegedly collecting translation charges and, in some cases, commissions of about 15 per cent of hospital bills.
Certain foreign women were identified in connection with alleged prostitution-related activities, including a Kenyan national who had entered India on a tourist visa and overstayed. In another case, a foreign national was found possessing Alprazolam tablets mixed with cough syrup, allegedly for consumption to produce intoxicating effects.
