Hyderabad: A local court in LB Nagar on Tuesday sentenced the seven members of the notorious nomadic Ghuman Gang to five years of rigourous imprisonment. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 on each of them in each of the three cases booked against them in Hayathnagar.
Those convicted were Chowhan Thara Singh (30), Mohd Sonu (24), Bittu (25), Gufthan (20), Saif Ali (20), Sadiq (20), Mohd Sajid (45), all residents of Akola district of Maharashtra.
The gang, over the last few years, had moved across Telangana, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Maharashtra, and under the pretext of selling bedsheets, got familiar with different localities. They lived in temporary tents on the outskirts of the city near highways or semi forest areas, and in the night, broke into houses and looted them. Clad in inner wear only, they used to carry weapons as well, police said. Initially mistaken to be members of the infamous ‘Chaddi Gang’, police later identified them with the help of technical evidence.
They were arrested by the Rachakonda police in December last year and are currently detained under the Preventive Detention Act in the Central Prison in Cherlapally.
