Hyderabad: Surgeons at Prathima Hospitals, Kachiguda, conducted a complex surgery on a 71-year-old male patient who was suffering from liver cancer in which the tumour had spread to 60 per cent of his liver and had extended along the inferior vena cava (IVC) into the right heart.

Led by senior gastroenterologist and liver transplant surgeon Dr Ch Madhusudhan, the medical team conducted a marathon surgery that lasted for over six hours on the patient Madhava Rao, hailing from Secunderabad. Apart from tumour, the patient was a diabetic and a decade ago also underwent a heart surgery, which posed a challenge for the treatment team.

The surgery, which was taken up on May 1, was complex because the doctors required both liver transplantation skills and cancer principles. “Such procedures fall under transplant oncology, which is a new concept to treat previously thought unresectable tumours, which can be taken up by applying liver transplant principles and methods,” Dr Madhusudhan said.

Directors of Prathima Hospitals Dr Harini Boinipally and Dr Prateek Boinipalli, COO Dr Ajith Singh congratulated the team for taking up the complex procedure.
