Hyderabad: Agricultural scientists and researchers here on Monday said that it was a moment of pride for the country for achieving remarkable progress in the last few years to attain self-sufficiency in food production.
The food production in the country has increased by three times while there has been a 10 time increase in horticultural produce and 12 times rise in fish production, which is enough to feed the country of 1.3 billion, Prof V Praveen Rao, VC, PJTSAU in his inaugural remarks at the fifth International Agronomy Congress on ‘Agri Innovation to Combat Food and Nutritional Congress’ held at PJTSAU, said.
Highlighting the challenges ahead, the senior scientist said that the country needs to increase food grain production 1.6 times by 2070 to feed the increasing population in the Country.
The president, International Weed Science Society, Brazil, Prof. Samunder Singh advised use of robotics and drones in agriculture for efficient utilization and site-specific application of inputs.
Prof PV Vara Prasad, president, Crop Science Society of America, USA expressed the challenges to make food security for 820 million people who don’t have access to food and more than two billion malnourished women and children. Senior researchers from various research institutions including Dr Panjab Singh, Chancellor, RLBCAU, Prof. Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary, DARE and DG, ICAR, Dr. V. K Singh, Director, ICAR-CRIDA, Hyderabad and others were present.
