Tension prevailed at Hyderabad’s Chintalmet after police took AIMIM MLA Mohd Mubeen and other leaders into custody during a protest against the demolition of a disputed wall. The dispute centres on rival claims that the structure belongs to a mosque or temple.

Hyderabad: Tension prevailed at Chintalmet in Rajendranagar on Monday morning after police took AIMIM Bahadurpura MLA Mohd Mubeen and several other leaders into custody when they attempted to prevent the authorities from demolishing a disputed wall.

The dispute over the wall, which one community claims belongs to a mosque and another to a temple, has simmered in the locality for the past few days.

Mohd Mubeen objected to the action, claiming that the structure belonged to a mosque. However, Rajendranagar MLA T. Prakash Goud and other leaders maintained that the land and the wall belonged to a temple.

On Monday morning, revenue officials, accompanied by police and GHMC personnel, reached the spot and reportedly began demolishing the wall. Mohd Mubeen, along with his supporters, arrived and staged a sit-in protest against the demolition. Police personnel subsequently removed the MLA from the protest site and bundled him into a police vehicle before shifting him to a local police station.

The incident heightened tension in the area, prompting the police to increase their deployment at Chintalmet to prevent any untoward incident.

The situation remained sensitive amid the dispute between the two communities over the ownership of the land and the wall.
