Hyderabad: In a tragic incident, a 21-year-old B Tech student died by suicide, allegedly over dowry harassment from her husband and in-laws in LB Nagar on Monday.

Gangotri, from Bhimanapally village in Nalgonda district and was living with her family in Mansoorabad and pursuing third-year engineering at a private college in Abdullapurmet, when she fell in love with Bhanu (23), and the couple secretly married at Keesaragutta in February this year. However, their families did not approve of their marriage.

According to the police, although Gangotri’s father initially agreed to formalise the marriage, Bhanu’s family allegedly insisted she come to Abdullapurmet alone, where they reportedly snatched her mangalsutra, abused her and demanded dowry.

Later, during a family meeting at the victim’s house, Bhanu’s parents allegedly demanded Rs 30 lakh in cash and 10 tolas of gold as dowry to accept their marriage.

Despite the girl’s family informing their inability, Bhanu’s family refused to relent. On November 16, Bhanu allegedly picked up an argument with Gangotri and threatened that he would marry someone else if the dowry was not given. Allegedly upset by the persistent harassment and threats, Gangotri hanged herself on Monday late evening. Police later recovered a suicide note from the spot.

Based on a complaint from her father, the LB Nagar police booked a case and booked Bhanu, his parents, Ellaswamy and Jayamma, his brother-in-law Bharat, his sister Nandini and others.
