Hyderabad: The Rachakonda Anti-Human Trafficking Unit along with the Balapur police raided a bangle manufacturing unit and rescued two children from child labour at Shaheen Nagar on Friday night.
The children were brought from Bihar and were working in the unit for meagre wages. They were crammed in a small rented room where they were working and living, police said.
Following an alert, the police team raided the unit on the ground floor of the multi-storied building. According to the police, the manufacturers had rented two rooms and had workers including the children working there, all from Bihar.
“They were brought to Hyderabad promising work and a monthly wage between Rs 1,600 to Rs 2,000 was paid. They were made to work for thirteen hours or more,” police said, adding that the suspects chose children over adults with an intention to pay less and extract more work. All the rescued children were under 14 years of age.
“The rooms had no proper ventilation and many people stayed in the same room, half of them children. They worked there and rested in the same premises. It had only one bathroom to be shared among them,” police said.
The police handed over the children to the Child Welfare Department and the Labour Department too was informed. The Balapur police booked a case against the bangle unit owner and house owner.
