Hyderabad-based HyperTune brings sport analytics via smartphone

Hyderabad: Cricket is a near religion in India and there are many who are aspiring to get into competitive cricket. However, not all have access to analytical tools that throw light on faults or techniques that need to be worked on. In cases where they are available, the cost is a factor.

To address the issue of access to analytics tools at an affordable price, city-based HyperTuneTechnologies has created an platform called  HomeGround that provides automated analytics of cricket training videos for coaches and players via smartphones.

HomeGround uses computer vision and artificial intelligence to get instant analytics on the training videos. HyperTune is among the select artificial intelligence companies that are being supported underthe startup accelerator programme Revv Up of Telangana Artificial Intelligence Mission (T-AIM).  T-Aim is helping in setting up meetings with mentors, industry exports, and potential investors.

“Cricket players and coaches at the grassroots do not have access to professional training analytics. Professional coaching is expensive and existing solutions require the purchase of sensors or high-definition cameras. A lot of time is wasted on manually reviewing these videos. We are building a solution which uses only a smartphone to help with player performances and match preparedness,” said Santosh Vuppala, HyperTune Technologies Co-Founder.

The team has four members with experience in building products, marketing, and engineering.  The platform is available in Android, ios and web versions. The subscription fee is Rs 800 per user per month. There is also a free version, he said.

What is offered? “We started with basic metrics of delivery and batsman analytics. Our plan is to expand into bowler and wicketkeeper analytics as well. In addition, we are building a future set for the app that includes augmented reality-based challenges, cricket drills, remote coaching, skill progression, and user profiles for talent scouting,” said Vuppula.

The platform will allow users access to videos with explanations to compare with the originals.  In days to come, it will make recommendations of the corrective actions to be taken to while working on a technique, he explained.

The company has set a target to reach about 20,000 users in a year. The beta version released contains most of the features but will be improvised based on the feedback. The paid version gradually will have more video time. The company plans to pitch the tool to individual players and coaches as well as cricket clubs.

“Bringing professional analytics to the grassroots has a huge impact on athlete training and performance. Providing access to such tools at an early stage helps the player get more insights onthe game, understand from experts and improve significantly,” he said about the impact it will create. The same platform with some tweaking can be used for the analysis of badminton, tennis, and basketball players, said Vuppula.
