Hyderabad: Family members of a 31-year-old brain dead victim Gaddam Mahesh, a resident of Borabanda, Hyderabad, have donated organs of the deceased to needy patients under State-run Jeevandan organ donation initiative.

The Hyderabad traffic police provided a green channel that helped transportation of live donor organs, in this case lungs, from Medicover Hospital, Madhapur, to KIMS Hospital, Secunderabad. The 15-kilometre stretch was covered within 15 minutes from 7.54 pm to 8.09 pm, Jeevandan officials said.

At around 12.45 am on Friday, October 16, Mahesh, who was returning home on his two-wheeler, was hit by an unknown vehicle near Kukatpally metro station pillar number 795.

Following the accident, Mahesh was first taken to a local hospital and later on Saturday, October 17, was shifted to Medicover Hospital, Madhapur. After 24 hours of intensive treatment, Mahesh did not recover and the attending neuro-physicians had to declare him brain dead due to severe head injury in the early hours of Sunday, October 18.

Gaddam Mahesh was working in a printing press at Lakdikapul and is survived by wife Sunitha, an eight-year-old daughter Geethika and six-year-old son Praneeth.

The Jeevandan organ donation coordinators took up grief counselling of the family members, including his wife Sunitha. Following counselling, the family members of Mahesh including his wife agreed to donate his organs.

The hospital surgeons retrieved two kidneys, liver, two lungs (in all five) and have sent the donor organs to various transplant facilities. The Jeevandan authorities have expressed their gratitude to the family members for saving lives through organ donation.
