Hyderabad: The railway police on Friday arrested a cloth businessman on charges of stealing valuables from passengers after offering them food laced with drugs.
Forty-four-year-old Mukaddar Ali, a native of Kakrala village in Budaun district in Uttar Pradesh, duped passengers in three separate incidents and made away with their bags containing gold and electronic gadgets along with cash, according to Secunderabad Division Railway Superintendent of Police B Anuradha.
Ali offered dates and raisins mixed with diazepam drug powder saying that it was ‘prasadam’ to a passenger Rajan Singh from Madhya Pradesh while travelling in Secunderabad-Nagpur express two months ago.
After Singh became unconscious, Ali stole the former’s bag containing Rs.15,000 in cash, a mobile phone, ATM cards and a passport. Before committing the offence in Secunderabad-Nagpur express, Ali went to Chennai and committed a similar offence in Charminar express.
During the journey, he started speaking with a passenger and when the train crossed Ongole station, he offered biscuits laced with diazepam powder to him. When the passenger became unconscious, Ali took away a gold ring and Rs.3,000 in cash.
In May 2019, Ali boarded Hazrat Nizamuddin express in Delhi where he developed friendship with a passenger. Once the train reached Balharshah railway station, he gave biscuits sprinkled with diazepam powder to the passenger. On noticing that the passenger was in deep sleep, Ali stole the passenger’s gold ring and chain and got down from the train.
Based on information, the police nabbed Ali and remanded him to judicial custody.
