Hyderabad: Tracing signals from an old phone number led investigators to a hotel area in Mumbai, where surveillance camera footage confirmed the presence of Usman Ali, a habitual offender from Nizamabad who allegedly absconded with a Rs 25 lakh cash chest while working as a cab driver earlier this month.
The incident occurred on September 10 when City Union Bank staff hired Ali’s cab to transport cash from the Secunderabad head office to its Balanagar branch.
However, midway, he tricked the employees and fled with the money.
The Balanagar police later identified him as a repeat offender. He abandoned the vehicle and switched off his phone to evade arrest.
With his presence traced, a special police team has been dispatched to Mumbai to nab him.
