Hyderabad: With the mercury steadily climbing, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is racing against time to complete works on swimming pools, which are a major draw in Hyderabad during its notorious summers.

Already, two indoor swimming pools built by the GHMC at an estimated cost of Rs 1.5 crore are ready for inauguration. These facilities are on the ground floor of the GHMC Multipurpose Sports Complex, Kukatpally. The badminton court on the first floor of this sports complex is already a hit among sports enthusiasts and locals.

Among the two swimming pools, one is a kids pool that is three feet deep, while the one built for adults has depths ranging from 4 feet to 7 feet. A new modern filtration system to keep the water clean and an underground illumination system inside the pool that aims for clear visibility makes this GHMC facility on par with pools operated by private players.

Separate washrooms for men and women equipped with showers and lockers for the swimmers are the other facilities in place. To further deck up the place, the flooring of the baby pool has aesthetically done paintings and designs of fish.

GHMC officials said the safety of swimmers was the utmost priority. “Top priority has been given to the construction quality and safety of people. In addition to good visibility, people will get to know the quality of the water due to the underground illumination inside the pool,” an official said.

On the other safety measures that would be taken up, he said that for six swimmers, there would be one dedicated coach taking care of them.

“Near the baby pool, there is ample space for the adults who accompany children. They too can keep an eye on the kids along with the swimming coaches. In addition to swimming costumes, safety gears will also be in place at the facilities,” he said.
