Hyderabad civic bodies join traffic police to ease peak-hour congestion

Cyberabad and Malkajgiri municipal corporations have joined hands with traffic police to tackle peak-hour congestion. The civic bodies are studying traffic movement, identifying locations for free-left turns and U-turn changes, removing encroachments and planning signal upgrades at key junctions.

Hyderabad: Cyberabad Municipal Corporation (CMC) and Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation (MMC) have launched an exercise with traffic police to improve traffic flow and reduce peak-hour congestion on key stretches in their respective jurisdictions.

Officials of the civic bodies are studying traffic movement at major junctions, identifying possible free-left turns and U-turns, and removing footpath encroachments to improve pedestrian safety and daily commutes.

The CMC has already identified waterlogging prone areas in Serilingampally, Quthbullapur and Kukatpally zones. Now in tandem with traffic police, officials are studying diversions, U-turn closures, commuter delays, slow vehicular movement and peak-hour traffic accumulation.

Higher traffic congestion was recorded at Cyber Towers, Madhapur, Raidurgam, Knowledge City, Biodiversity Junction, JNTU Junction, HITEC City route, Miyapur-Kukatpally stretch, Financial District and Kokapet. Interchanges near Outer Ring Road and IKEA Junction also face extreme peak-hour traffic accumulation.

A senior CMC engineering official said a comprehensive plan would focus on fluid mobility design rather than managing traffic build-up.

Meanwhile, the MMC also plans to develop free-left turns at 24 locations, including Uppal X Roads, Habsiguda X Roads, Survey of India and Snehapuri Junction. It will clear 127 encroachments to ease congestion.

MMC officials assessed vehicle movement, free-left lane availability, road islands, bus stops, utility poles and pedestrian facilities. Stretches at Bandlaguda Y-junction, Mansoorabad Y-junction, Hayathnagar T-junction, BN Reddy Nagar junction and SKD Nagar junction were identified for development, along with the free-left route from Panama Godown to Sahara service road.

MMC also plans to modernise traffic signals at key junctions. Of 82 signal locations, 72 are operational, and 10 are out of service. Traffic police and MMC officials recently assessed movement at Habsiguda Junction, Little Flower College Junction and Uppal Junction.
