Hyderabad: Surgeons at Prasad Hospitals, Nacharam, have performed a complicated skull surgery to remove a facial tumour on a 22-year-old patient hailing from West Godavari in Andhra Pradesh.
Shyam Ganesh had developed the benign tumour on facial nerve originating from the brain, which is responsible for various muscle functions resulting in facial expressions. As the tumour was gradually growing, the patient started to develop grave symptoms like inability to close the eyelid, deviation of angle of mouth to the opposite side, altered taste sensation etc.
The surgery, known as the first lateral skull base exploration and excision, was led by ENT surgeon and Otorhinolaryngologist Dr S Nishanth. Doctors said if left untreated, the tumour would have continued to grow, compressing and invading other surrounding structures, resulting in other cranial nerve palsies with symptoms like giddiness, hearing loss, speech and swallowing disorders etc.
“After a marathon surgery that lasted nine hours, the tumour was completely removed. The patient has recovered and is completely healthy. The facial nerve will gain its strength and function in six to 12 months. The patient can now resume his normal routine,” Dr Nishant said.
