Hyderabad: Two persons lost nearly Rs 6 lakh to cyber fraudsters who sent them links on RTO challans through WhatsApp.
In the first case, a man received an APK file named ‘RTO challan’ which he mistakenly opened. He later found that an amount of Rs 1,01,226 was debited from his two accounts. In the other case, a man lost Rs 5 lakh to fraudsters who compromised his phone through an APK file named “RTA Challan 140.apk’.
The police appealed to the people not to click on any links or download or install APK files sent through unknown mobile numbers.
“Once installed, these files secretly access the victim’s mobile phone and banking details, leading to unauthorised transactions and huge financial loss,” the Cybercrime officials warned.
