Hyderabad: Deep earth excavation works beneath HMRL metro pillars raise safety outcry
Deep excavation near Hyderabad Metro pillars behind the Secunderabad ISKCON temple has raised structural safety concerns among residents and devotees. The work is being carried out near pillars 1191, 1192 and 1193, with HMRL officials expected to inspect the site.
Hyderabad: Deep earth excavation works directly beneath Hyderabad Metro pillars behind the Secunderabad ISKCON temple have triggered widespread panic.
The digging, taking place at a site adjacent to a local petrol outlet near Sangeeth Junction, has also raised severe structural safety concerns for residents of a three-storey apartment building located just 200 metres away from the vulnerable pillars.
The hazardous earth excavation began a couple of weeks ago, stretching directly between metro pillar numbers 1191, 1192, and 1193 on the metro corridor covering Ameerpet to Uppal.
Heavy machinery, including an earth mover and a concrete mixer, has been stationed at the site. Furthermore, massive piles of construction materials—such as sand, cement, and iron rods—have been dumped dangerously close to the pillars’ foundations.
While the deep earth excavation continued at a brisk pace, officials from Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) failed to visit the site or verify whether the private contractor was adhering to mandatory safety protocols. This apparent lack of oversight allowed the hazardous digging to proceed unchecked.
Sources within the Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) told Telangana Today, “The excavated area surrounding the pillars had been leased out to a private contractor for commercial purposes, including parking and retail shops.”
Soon, a senior team of HMRL engineering wing officials will visit the area and check the dug-up activity, sources added.
Residents of a nearby apartment building claim the ongoing construction threatens their homes. They are demanding that HMRL stop work immediately to ensure the safety of nearly 100 families.
The Secunderabad ISKCON temple is always crowded with devotees who fear that ongoing deep excavation works could disrupt the area. They are demanding that the project be stopped to preserve the temple’s spiritual environment.
