Hyderabad: The doctors at Care Hospitals, Malakpet, on Monday announced successful lifesaving high-risk laparoscopic gallbladder surgery on a 72-year-old woman from Nalgonda, who was admitted in a critical condition with severe right upper abdominal pain and hypotension.
The patient’s condition was further complicated by comorbidities including Coronary Artery Disease (CAD), a previous Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA), Chronic Renal Failure (CRF), diabetes, hypertension and ongoing antiplatelet therapy, placing her at extremely high risk for bleeding and surgical complications.
A team led by Dr Bhupathi Rajendra Prasad, Head, Department of Surgical Gastroenterology and Robotic Surgery, performed laparoscopic surgery.
Despite the complexity, early surgical intervention prevented severe sepsis and further organ complications. The surgery was challenging because the patient was admitted in a critical stage, Dr Rajendra Prasad said.
The patient began mobilising within 24 hours and had a smooth postoperative recovery. Such cases are rarely managed laparoscopically in elderly patients with multiple comorbidities, making this a notable achievement.
