Hyderabad: Surgeons from Medicover Hospitals, Madhapur have provided treatment to a patient who was struggling from Ankylosing Spondylitis, a rare arthritis that causes stiffness in the spine, resulting in bending that makes it impossible to stand straight. The 32-year-old patient Faraz, hailing from Baroda, Gujarat, first experienced stiffness in his spine around two decades ago, which resulted in curved spine and deformed his posture.
After a battery of diagnostic tests, doctors decided to take-up deformity correction on November 12. “His spine bones were fused and stiff, which was a big challenge for the anesthesiologists to put in the endotracheal tube and to position him in prone position on the operating table,” said Spine Surgeon, Medicover Hospitals, Dr. Surya Prakash Rao Voleti.
“General anesthesia was given to the patient and care taken at every instance to ensure the vital organs were not under extreme stress in prone position, during the surgery. After an eight-hour marathon procedure, the deformity was rectified completely. The patient returned to normal spine alignment, which also resulted in the patient’s height increasing by four inches,” Dr. Rao said. Post-surgery, Faraz was discharged from the hospital on November 25 and doctors said that he would be able to lead a normal life.
