Doctors at NIMS successfully performed pulmonary endarterectomy and tricuspid valve repair on a 30-year-old patient, R Shiva Prasad.
Hyderabad: Doctors at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences on Monday said that they have successfully performed pulmonary endarterectomy and tricuspid valve repair on a 30-year-old patient, R Shiva Prasad, who was suffering from chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) and severe tricuspid regurgitation.
Essentially, the NIMS surgeons conducted two surgeries. One involved the removal of blood clots/ scar tissue from the pulmonary arteries of the lungs through pulmonary endarterectomy and the second involved repairing the tricuspid valve, which is one of the four heart valves.
The patient, a resident of Kachapur village, Kohed mandal of Karimnagar district, has been suffering from chronic pulmonary thromboembolism, wherein blood clots are formed on pulmonary arteries of lungs. This leads to dangerously high blood pressure (pulmonary hypertension) in the lungs. This, coupled with severe tricuspid regurgitation (leaky heart valve), leads to a very complicated surgery.
The complex procedure was conducted on July 2 by Additional Professor Dr Surya Satya Gopal under the supervision of Prof Amaresh, Head, Department of Cardio Thoracic Surgery, NIMS. The patient has fully recovered after the surgery and is ready to be discharged tomorrow, the doctors informed.
NIMS Director Prof Nagari Beerappa said that six such complex pulmonary endarterectomy cases have been successfully completed recently and these surgeries, which cost over Rs 6 lakh, were performed completely free of cost through Aarogyasri.
